Thomas Hutchinson is appointed Chief Justice of the Superior Court.

He succeeds the recently deceased Stephen Sewall. Upset at not being appointed to the court, James Otis Sr. resigns as from the Admiralty Court. Animosity towards Hutchinson is subsequently passed down to the younger James Otis.
